The Sphinx, which is aptly called Abu el-Hol (Father of Terror) in Arabic, stands in the desert sands in front of the east of the pyramid of Chefren. The reclining statue is 66 feet tall, and some 188 feet long. The great effigy with the body of a lion was carved from a spur of limestone rock originally used for quarrying, while the paws and tail were made with added blocks.
